‘Ozone therapy’ is an umbrella term for a number of closely related leading edge therapies that seek to promote healing by flooding the body with oxygen.

What is ozone?
Ozone is an activated, trivalent (three atoms) form of oxygen. Oxygen is O2, whereas ozone is O3. Over a period of 20-30 minutes, ozone breaks down into two atoms of regular oxygen - by giving up one atom of singlet oxygen leaving a single, reactive oxygen atom (O1). Medical ozone is made when medical grade oxygen is electrically activated (using a medical grade ozone generator) to form ozone. Ozone is germicidal, bactericidal, and fungicidal; yet completely life-stimulating to all healthy cells. Oxygen has these properties too, but less strongly. Ozone was discovered by Fridereich Schonbein and was described in a letter written in 1826 ("The Use of Ozone in Medicine" 3rd English Edition, page 22). It has been used in medical and naturopathic medicine since the 1870's.

As a lack of sufficient cellular oxygen is a major cause of poor health, leading to conditions such as arthritis, low immunity, constant tiredness, regular colds and flu's, hay fever, migraine, low vitality, M.E. and so on. When the body is flooded with an activated form of oxygen, namely ozone, people consistently report that these conditions as well as their general health and energy levels dramatically improve.

People with respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis also respond particularly well, though ozone is never actually inhaled,  it is applied by various methods which bypass the lungs.

Ozone has a long history of use in naturopathic medicine as a treatment designed to detoxify the body rather than to treat diseases as such. However ‘scientifically speaking’ ozone has been shown to have three main benefits:

1. Ozone activates the immune system.
2. Ozone releases a singlet oxygen molecule that destroys all harmful viruses, bacteria, fungi and other pathogens.
3. Ozone therapy has been consistently demonstrated to result in considerable and lasting levels of pain relief from ailments such as arthritis, fibromyalgia and injury.

How does the treatment work?
Transdermal (through the skin) ozone is the most popular and effective method of flooding the body with ozone. Using this method, ozone is introduced into the body via the skin while sitting in a hot steam cabinet or a Far Infrared heat box.

As the pores of the skin open due to the gentle heat and steam ozone enters the body transdermally (via the skin). The ozone penetrates the blood, lymph and fat. By allowing the ozone in and the toxins out, via the sweating process, this method is incredibly effective at detoxifying and oxygenating the body. This method is not new, Dr Kellogg first used this ozone in a steam sauna in his naturopathic clinic in Michigan USA, as far back as 1881.

Other methods of Ozone
Other methods, used as and when in necessary is insufflation (blowing ozone onto the skin or into an opening). Anal insufflation, ear insufflation and vaginal insufflation are all common methods of getting ozone deep into the body where it can do the most good by neutralizing harmful yeasts, bacteria, viruses and parasites.
